Tottenham Hotspur: Top of the Table
I wasn’t alive in 1960, in fact neither was my mother, but that’s the last time Spurs won the first 3 games of the season. 2009 and we have done it again – maximum points from 3 matches, and sitting pretty at the top of the table.
Yesterday was certainly a tougher task than the 5-1 demolition of Hull midweek. It was made harder when the impressive looking Carlton Cole opened the scoring for the Hammers with a 22-yard spectacular after the break. Just 5 minutes later though, he turned from hero to villain (or villain to hero for us Spurs fans!) when his awful attempted backpass served as the perfect throughball for Defoe to equalise.
I only caught some of the match, but from what I did see Spurs were confident and controlled – but not necessarily in control. West Ham were not easy to break down, and were giving as good as they got – almost.
A feature of our play so far this season has been the pressure applied offensively. The result was a deserved winner scored by Aaron Lennon, superbly finishing with his left foot powerfully into the far corner.
In 1960/1 we won the league after winning the first ELEVEN matches. Anywhere close to that and I’d be happy, however, with matches against United and Chelsea on the horizon the winning streak may come to an end much sooner. Let us hope not, I quite enjoy seeing us at the top.
Anyone at the West Ham game? Give us your insight below…..
